Oratane

Severe acne is the condition Oratane is used for. Isotretinoin, its active substance, is a retinoid; the Oratane leaflet says it lowers sebum output, reduces bacteria and inflammation, and helps open blocked pores. The Australian leaflet lists capsules from 5 mg to 40 mg; this page sells 10 mg and 20 mg.

A baby conceived during treatment faces an extremely high risk of severe deformity. For that reason the leaflet requires effective contraception for a full month before the first capsule, for the whole course, and for a month after the last one. Oratane is also not taken while breastfeeding.

An allergy to isotretinoin, vitamin A or any retinoid excludes it, as do tetracycline antibiotics, severe liver disease, very high blood fats (triglycerides or cholesterol) and too much vitamin A.

Seeing or hearing things that are not there, or feeling depressed with or without thoughts of suicide, should be reported to the doctor without delay.

Capsules are taken with food and swallowed whole with water or milk, at the prescribed dose. Blood checks of liver function, sugar and cholesterol are done regularly, as directed by the doctor. Use sunscreen and limit sun and solarium exposure. Waxing and dermabrasion are off-limits during treatment and for six months after it. Blood should not be donated during treatment or for at least four weeks after stopping. The capsules are for the person they were prescribed for only.

Vitamin A supplements, tetracycline antibiotics, other acne products and progestogen-only pills are listed as interacting.

Dry lips and skin are typical, together with fragile skin, dry eyes, nosebleeds, headache, tiredness, temporary thinning of hair and aching muscles or joints. Vomiting, a persistent headache, blurred vision, severe stomach pain, muscle weakness, blood in the stools, blistering or severe rashes and depression need prompt medical attention.

For Oratane 20 mg the leaflet gives below 30 °C; the 10 mg capsules are kept below 25 °C. Protect them from light and moisture. Follow the storage directions on the pack you receive.
