In brief

Carbamazepine treats epilepsy (partial seizures and generalised tonic-clonic seizures), idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia and mania, and is used to maintain treatment in bipolar disorder.

Carbamazepine (Tegretol, Teril)

Epilepsy is the first condition carbamazepine is listed for: simple and complex partial seizures, generalised seizures that include a tonic-clonic component, and mixed seizure types. The other listed uses are idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia and mania, plus maintenance treatment in bipolar disorder, as set out by healthdirect for Teril.
This listing shows carbamazepine 100 mg, 200 mg and 400 mg. It does not name the manufacturer of the tablets supplied, so check the label on the pack you receive and confirm with your prescriber or pharmacist that it matches your prescription.

Carbamazepine 200 mg by pack size

Compare packs of the same strength. These examples are for 200 mg and are calculated from the listed prices at the shop’s Australian-dollar rate on 8 October 2026, before delivery or other checkout charges.
Strength Pack size Pack price Price per tablet
200 mg 60 A$89.63 A$1.49
200 mg 180 A$189.61 A$1.05
200 mg 360 A$348.21 A$0.97
Taking the 60 pack as the baseline, a 200 mg tablet is about 29.5% cheaper in the 180 pack and about 35.2% cheaper in the 360 pack.
A lower price per tablet means a larger upfront payment. Choose only the quantity and strength appropriate to your prescription, and check the expiry date. Prices can change, so confirm the current pack price before ordering.

Limits of treatment

It does not work for absence, atonic or myoclonic seizures, is not suitable for status epilepticus, and is not designed for mild face pain or headache. Teril is suitable both as the only epilepsy medicine and in combination with others.

Australian products

Novartis is the sponsor of Tegretol, which comes as 100 mg and 200 mg tablets, CR tablets of 200 mg and 400 mg, and a suspension. Teril, a 200 mg uncoated tablet, is scheduled as Prescription Only (Schedule 4). The form of the tablets on this page is not specified.

Who must avoid carbamazepine

The Tegretol leaflet excludes people with an allergy to carbamazepine, a blood disorder, severe liver disease, lupus (SLE), AV block or hepatic porphyria, and anyone taking a tricyclic antidepressant or an MAO inhibitor.

Important precautions

  • A blood test before starting may be needed for people of Han Chinese or Thai heritage, because of the risk of serious skin reactions.
  • Birth defects are a possible risk in pregnancy.
  • Tegretol lowers the effectiveness of oral contraceptives; an additional non-hormonal method is needed with hormonal contraception.
  • The leaflet advises against alcohol and grapefruit juice.

Taking the tablets

The Tegretol leaflet says to take the tablets with water during or after a meal, usually two or three times a day as the doctor directs, and not to crush CR tablets.

Side effects in the Tegretol leaflet

Among the possible effects named are sleepiness, fainting or dizziness, nausea and vomiting, a dry mouth, changed taste, weight increase, swelling, hair loss, fever, muscle pain or weakness, poor coordination, problems speaking, numbness or tingling, double or blurred vision, confusion, hallucinations, depression, agitation, aggression, skin redness or itching, difficulty breathing and seizures.

Storage

Tegretol is stored in a dry place below 30 °C. Follow the storage directions on the pack you receive.
